Helping You Reach Your Job Search and Career Goals

03/19/2010 #FF — Honest Advice

There are many people on Twitter who give advice about the various aspects of the job search. The three people being featured today definitely don’t pull any punches. They stand behind what they say. That, in my opinion, is worth a lot.

Gayle Howard

Gayle Howard

Job seekers really need to follow Gayle. Her tweets never fail to deliver insightful information about what to do to be successful in your job hunt. It’s very apparent that she knows what she is talking about. Listen to her.

Here are three examples of tweets from Gayle:

“#Jobseekers: Networking is about interacting with people and building relationships. It is not about taking from people.”
“Careerists: your professional network is one that will be most valuable to your career. It’s in your interests to invest time & energy in it.”
“#Jobseekers: think about what you like or dislike before job hunting. Do you thrive in larger or smaller organizations? What works best?”

Seriously, go follow Gayle right now. I’ll wait.

OK, you’re back? Good, because I have a couple more folks to tell you about.

Animal

Recruiting Animal

Yes, he may have a puppet head for his avatar. Yes, his Twitter handle reminds you of a wild and crazy character on The Muppet Show. But make no mistake — Recruiting Animal is the real deal if you want good information about the various topics on job seeking.

He warns people up front in his Twitter bio “Sensitive? DON’T FOLLOW ME.” And he’s right. Animal is direct (biting?) with his criticism, loud (trust me, you’ll have to turn down the volume when tuning in to his radio show), and if you’re sensitive, I could see him upsetting you. But if you have a sense of humor and are really open to hearing his message, you will learn a lot from him.

Ryan Rancatore

Ryan Rancatore

Ryan’s forte is personal branding, something that is very important for everyone regardless of your place on the career spectrum (just starting out, in “maintenance” mode, looking for work, or changing careers). His home blog, personalbranding101.com, contains a wealth of information about using social media to promote your personal brand.

But lately, Ryan has been all over the Internet! He regularly posts on the blog at Brand-Yourself.com, had a controversial post on MikeStengerDotCom, and was recently interviewed on AltaeeBlog.com as one of the 100 Personal Branding Experts to Follow on Twitter in 2010.

Ryan has a unique point of view with his take of personal branding — one that is a blend of the established thinking on this topic and a fresh perspective that shakes it up a little.

When seeking advice, do you look for those who will give you a truly honest response?

    Melissa,

You truly are TOO kind! Your willingness to share and connect with others is a trait that should be admired and replicated by all. Keep it up.

All very sweet things to say, Ryan. Thank you :)

Keeping the focus on the needs of job seekers and people who are unsure of their next career move is what it’s all about. If what I’m doing to facilitate connections helps readers achieve their goals, then I’ve done my part.
