No Such Thing

A while back on Twitter, I read this tweet from Mark Oakes: “There’s no such thing as a ‘natural’. It takes hard work to get good and even more to get great.”

I agree with that. While I do believe a person has natural aptitude in this area or that, you are only going to go so far unless you put in the work to get that new job or be successful in your career transition.

This video by Chris Brogan also speaks to the need for working hard to get what you want:

He makes a great point when he says, “What are you not sacrificing that I am sacrificing to get there?” From the laundry list of activities that Chris rattled off, it’s obvious he’s a very busy guy and does make many sacrifices to be able to live the life that he has.

Now, do you have to do what Chris Brogan has done? It depends — if your goal is to have a life comparable to what he has, then yes. But, if your aspirations are a bit different, then set your sights accordingly. If you aren’t where you want to be, then you still will have to make some sacrifices because life is a series of trade-offs.

“There’s no such thing as ‘a natural'” or luck. Knowing that, what are you willing to sacrifice to accomplish your goals? What’s stopping you from doing it?
