Are You Writing a Pain Letter?

I ran across a YouTube submission put together by Liz Ryan that talked about pain letters and what they are. Curious, I listened, and I liked what she had to say.

In essence, a pain letter is something that you write to the hiring manager that directly addresses a pain that a business may be experiencing and shows the hiring manager why you would be the perfect person to alleviate that pain.

The reasons Liz Ryan gives for why a pain letter should be written include:

  • The pain letter is more active than a traditional cover letter.
  • It addresses the needs of the company.
  • “Nobody hires anybody in this economy unless there is pain…”

It’s an interesting perspective that makes a lot of sense.
